Watercolor - Sand Dune

Went down to Long Beach island yesterday with my friend to see an art exhibit - it was awful. Anyway I took a bunch of photos of the beach and dunes. I painted this last night and will do some more today. I live at the NJ shore and tend to paint the Maine coast so these are a nice change. This is on e-bay now.

Study - Dark Haired Girl

I did this study today in homage to Malcolm Liepke - I love his work and I did this study in his style. I did it in watercolor on skecth paper and it is 8X9 inches. It was a fun piece to do.

Figure - Girl With Blue Dress

Did this study today and I like it. To bad it is on sketch paper rather than good watercolor paper - but I like painting on this junk paper - go figure. I may try to mount this paper on a watercolor board - but I don't want to damage the image, so I might just leave it alone. I guess it would be frameable as it is. Can't wait until tomorrow to paint another figure!

Illustration Friday - Rain

Today's subject for Illustration Friday is Rain - something that we are suppose to be getting for the next week! So I did two images - couldn't decide which I liked best.

Dark Haired Woman - Watercolor Study

This is another small study I did yesterday on sketch paper. I call these studies because they are for me learning experiences - I am working on the painting techniques for figures and features. They are also fun to do - no pressure just a quick rough in sketch and paint. These studies are worth keeping - maybe for future reference for a larger painting or just as small individual paintings that stand on their own. Who knows, maybe in 100 years these will be worth a fortune!

I have a new favorite painter - my favorites change a lot - anyway, his name is Malcolm Liepke and his work is just amazing. He has me rethinking my idea to go abstract with my figures!

Study - Girl's head

In my unending quest to study and get better at figurative painting I am doing small studies of heads and just facial features. I did 2 last night while sitting on the deck. I am always complaining that I don't have time to paint what I want to or just study and play with the figure so I decided while I am just sitting out on the deck in the evening I could put that time to good use. Last night I brought out my paints and some cheap drawing paper and did two of these studies before it got to dark to see the paints. They are small (she measures 7X6) and fun to do, a great learning tool - I hope to get better at doing these.

Small Watercolors

I am doing a series of small paintings 6X71/2 inches. These are on E-bay now. So why am I doing such small paintings? Well I have a package of bubble envelopes and these paintings will fit just right into them - I was wondering what I was going to do with them. I bought them to mail out my Odyssey Tarot deck but they were a bit small. So problem solved - paint some small paintings for E-bay - a win-win situation.

New Collage

Now this is what I'm talking about - combining the figure with an abstract background. Finished this today 11X15 inches on paper with collage elements, news paper, acrylic and mixed media. I am liking this one!

Illustration Friday - Jungle

Today's Illustration Friday theme is "Jungle". This is my take on the Urban Jungle - in today's modern world it truly is a jungle out there - and our modern world is destroying the jungle as it exists.

Another Maine dock painting - I like the boat reflection in this one. I have been painting figures today and I think I had a mini-break through. I want my figures semi-abstract and blending into or working with the background. To do this my figures must be pretty flat - not much detail and not much contour or shape. To do this the figure is more like a silhouette - a flat shape but with color and abstract shapes on top - hard to explain but I need to work on this idea. If I get a painting I will post it.

Watercolor - Fishing Boat

Finished this today - it is a small painting 7X10 inches. I seem to be englamored with the Maine Coast lately. The other night I went through a lot of my photos and picked out some interesting images to paint. I have been to Maine many times and have a ton of these type of photos and they are fun to paint. So for now it is images of Maine until I get sick of these and move on to something new.

Photo and watercolor

This is a photo I took in Maine on a trip to Bar Harbor. I have always loved this photo.

This is the watercolor I painted from the photo. I love the vertical presentation of the painting. I mostly do these seascapes in a horizontal format so this is a nice change and it works well for the subject.

Figure - Acrylic on paper

Worked on this today - 30X22 inches - acrylic on paper. Still not what I am aiming for - I need to simplify and flatten.
