New Watercolor

I am going to do an Arts & Crafts show in PA at the end of May. It is really a show for my jewelry but I am painting a few watercolors to have for sale too. I did a show there last year and I sold some paintings - so I want to have them again this year. What I don't sell I will put on e-bay in June.

Watercolor Tutorial

I just finished this painting and took photos at each step and thought I would post them as a tutorial on how I do my landscape paintings. Click on any image to see it bigger.

I do a very loose sketch - either from a photo or sketch in my sketch book. I will work from back to front. I always work upright on an easel.

I completely wet just the sky area and paint in my sky - in sections I will blot out the color with a tissue to form clouds.

My next step is to put in the background mountains and tree line. Now I am working on dry paper but with very wet pigment.

I next put in the first layer of the water - this is on dry paper but with very wet paint (lots of water and just a little pigment) I want the first layer of the water to be light - I can always darken it later.

Next I start forming the middle piece of land and rocks - while doing this I put in a few foreground rocks - my paper is dry.

I wet the area I will be painting my background trees and mix up a dark batch of bluish/green - this pigment is much ticker as the paper is wet - I loosely paint in the trees. At this point I also added a few more foreground rocks.

I now start to form the foreground piece of land starting with more rocks and a little bit of the grass.

My next step was to paint in more trees - the same as the previous trees - I wet the area first and mix up a thicker dark pigment and paint in the trees.

Next I put down the sand area on the beach and I darkened the water in places. This was all done on dry paper. Now I just added some details - like some trees in front of the fir trees and some high light on the water and signed my name. The finished painting is at the begging of this post.

Mixed Media Figure

This is the figure study I did today. I don't know I think I am trying too hard? I am getting close to what I want but I am not quite there yet. I think right now these are too stiff or something - I need to think about this and keep working. Problem is I need to paint for e-bay - it never ends! This is not a great photo - the colors are a bit bright - don't know why.
Here is a close up of the face. Color not good on this one either. At least I like it better than yesterday's.

Mixed Media and Collage

Just finished this mixed media painting. Started out being a watercolor figure study then I added collage, then acrylic, then more collage, then oil pastel, then black marker, gold metallic paint, etc. - well you get the idea. When I say mixed I am not kidding.
Here is a close up of the figure. I don't know how I feel about this painting so I thought I would photo it (I can always see problems better this way) and let it sit for awhile before it is 2 feet thick with stuff!

Illustration Friday - Fortune

This weeks theme for Illustration Friday is Fortune. This is an illustration I did for my collage tarot deck The Odyssey Tarot this card was the Seven of Cups. So many choices and all that glitters is not gold so be careful what kind of "fortune" you wish for.

"Revelation" - Mixed Media and Collage Painting

I am in a very strange place - having a few problems and need to get back on track. Just finished this mixed media and collage painting and I must say it is a strange one. The image measures 14X11 and is painted on smooth Bristol. I used collage, watercolor, acrylic and some oil pastel. I did this painting in about 1/2 hour - it just flowed. I would say that this is unusual coloring for me but that was what was sitting on my acrylic pallet. I started out doing a watercolor figure painting - go figure.

"Generations" - Mixed-Media and Collage

This is a new mixed media painting I just finished - it is called "Generations". The image is 16X12. I wanted the feel of old photographs and muted color. Click on the image to see it bigger.

Here is a close up of the woman.

Before and After - Watercolor

I posted this painting (top version) on e-bay and it didn't sell. I took a good look at it and decided it was just ho-hum and needed work to make it a better painting. The second image is the reworked painting. I extended the tree line and made it less static on the top - making it a real tree line. I added a little bit of land on the far right for balance. I changed the color of the water and changed the formation of the foreground rocks. The two openings in the rocks were too similar and I didn't like the placement of the top opening - the rocks are much better now. Last I added a few seagulls.

I do thinks the second painting is so much better and I re-posted it to e-bay, let's see if anyone else thinks it is better!

"Arabian Nites" - Mixed Media and Collage Painting

Finished this painting today, it is 30X22. I feel that I am working in a series and this is the second painting - the first being "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". These paintings remind me of old tapestries and they are very textured with all of the layers, collage and mixed media used to complete them. It feels good to be painting abstract and big again! I really need to get a new art portfolio together.
