Three New Abstracts

Acrylic on canvas 24X20

Acrylic on canvas 36X36

Acrylic on paper 30X22

So I finally got some time to paint today. I worked on these three - in the order shown. The first two are on canvas - the second one I have been playing with for a long time - it has gone through many color variations. The third painting is on paper and is painted over an unsuccessful figure painting. To see the paintings larger click on the image.

Abstract on Paper

New abstract on paper 30X22. I have been working on a canvas 30X30 and beating it to death so I put it aside for now - I had paint left on the pallet so I did this abstract on paper and it seems to work.

Watercolors

Two new watercolors for Ebay - I finished these today and will do two more tomorrow. I guess I need to paint more snow scenes - well it is pretty cold here in NJ. I worked on a large abstract on canvas this week but I am not sure how I feel about it yet - so I guess it is not finished.

New Abstract on Canvas

New abstract painting on canvas - 24X20 inches. I really like this painting and I painted it quickly - I also like the size of this canvas for a quick abstract.

I will be teaching an abstract class in January at the local art guild here in NJ. I am excited and need to get my thoughts together to plan the classes. I sure hope I get some students to sign up!

Abstract on Canvas

This is also a new painting I completed this week. I like it a lot - why?? Well I like the composition - it has a lot of repeats in the curve/hook shape. It has good space distribution. It is interesting and the coloring is a bit different for me. I have decided to work this winter on exploring color - I have always felt color is my weakness - I rely on the old tried and true and I want to go for the unexpected. I wanted to post some new work here because I think my poor computer is living on borrowed time.

New Abstract on Canvas

This is a new abstract painting on canvas 30X24 which I have called "Watchtower". I haven't been blogging much lately because of a computer crash and the time it took to get things back up and running - also buying an external HD and backing everything up. I seem to be back up and running OK now and I want to post some images of new art work and jewelry on my other blog.

Mixed Media Collage - "Imagine"

I still have a few of the 12X16 canvases that I purchased for the Artful Gifts Exhibit at the Noyes Museum. I did 2 more mixed media collages last night. This is the first one called "Imagine" and is 16X12. I like the coloring and design of this painting, I really can't find any fault with it at all! I think I will probably do 2 more of these as the deadline for sending in my entries is September 19. You can click on the image to see it larger.

Art Thoughts

Well I blogged about winning the first place award at the Ocean County Artists Guild Juried show and the opening was on Sunday - it is a great show and I am honored to have won a prize. So after the awards ceremony some guy asks to take a photo of me with my painting - I think nothing of this until I see it on the Guild's web site and I look like I weight 500 lbs - I should sue - if only I could Photoshop it!! If this photo doesn't make me want to lose weight I don't know what will - am I posting a link to this photo - I think NOT. So I have decided to start watching what I eat and walking again - I guess I have digressed from my title Art Thoughts but this is setting up why I was out walking this AM.

Soooooo - I am out walking this fine morning and thinking about my art and painting in general and why I do it - I sure am not doing it for the money I am making!! I came to realize I just like to paint - to mess around and make marks with the brush (good thing I paint abstractly). I like the color, the juiciness of the paint, rubbing it on a canvas or paper, seeing how one shape or mark reacts with the next - well just the act of painting. I don't feel I have something profound to say in my work. I just hope the marks I am making at some point turn out to be pleasing to me - that's right, just to me. If that doesn't happen then I am quite willing to squeeze out more paint and make more marks - this is not rocket science.

I am not belittling my work or saying I do not sometimes make a good painting, I am just saying what drives me is nothing deep or grandiose, it is just what I enjoy doing "painting". I need to remember this - because I get into trouble when I over think it!

This is a new abstract, image size 30X22 - on watercolor paper - framed size 36X28. The title is "Looking West". I entered this painting into the Ocean County Artists Guild Annual Juried Exhibit and got a call today it won the first prize. WooooHoooo - great news. I wasn't sure which painting to enter into this show I guess I made the right decision. The opening is Sunday 9/7 - I will be there.

Abstract Collage 2

This is the second collage mixed media painting I did on Monday night. It is also on crescent illustration board and is 14X17 inches. It is composed of acrylic paint, newspaper, collage papers, oil pastel and anything else that was handy. I liked the first piece but I like this one even better. I love the blue in the bottom portion of the painting. You can click on the above image to see it larger. It sort of reminds me of a map.

Abstract Collage

I brought all my stuff to do painting and collage to my Monday night art group. I did two mixed media collage paintings that I am really happy with. This was the first one. It is on crescent illustration board and is 17X16 inches. I haven't done any collage work in a long time and I really enjoyed doing these. What I really need to do is work that will fit frames that I have on hand because I cannot afford to buy new stuff right now. You can click on the above image to see it larger.

New Abstract with Collage

Just finished this today - it is acrylic and collage on a canvas board 12X16 (click on the image to see it larger). In the art group I belong to we were looking at some paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and got into a discussion about texture and such. I have been thinking about this and decided to do a few smaller abstracts using collage as texture - this is the first. I am going to bring this and a bunch of textured papers in on Monday and see what we come up with.

Dream Catcher - New Abstract

This is a new abstract I just finished - it is 36X36 and on canvas. I love this painting - it is hanging on the wall in my studio and it is awesome. I am usually very critical of everything I paint but this one I can find no fault with.
